About the Wyoming General Knowledge Test
Wyoming’s roads demand respect. You’ll fight crosswinds on I-80 near Rawlins, navigate steep grades on I-25 past Casper, and share lanes with oil tankers on US-287. Our test mirrors the real Wyoming CDL General Knowledge exam so you’re ready for these conditions.
The weather here changes fast. A clear morning turns into a blizzard by lunch. Your pre-trip inspection must check for ice buildup on lights and mirrors. Snowplows and wildlife crossings are common – you need to know how to react without panic.
Wyoming’s economy runs on energy and agriculture. You’ll haul crude from the Powder River Basin or livestock from the ranches near Laramie. That means understanding cargo securement for heavy loads and tanker handling for hazardous materials. Our questions focus on what you’ll actually face.
We built this test with real WYDOT question formats. Take it in 60 minutes. Score 80% or higher. You’ll walk into the DMV knowing you’re ready.
What This Test Covers
- Air Brakes: Essential for controlling your rig on Wyoming’s long downhill grades like Sherman Hill.
- Pre-Trip Inspection: In Wyoming’s extreme cold, a bad brake chamber or frozen airline means a breakdown – not an option.
- Cargo Securement: You must tie down loads properly for wind gusts that hit 70 mph on the high plains.
- Hazardous Materials: Hauling fuel from the oil fields? You need the H endorsement and knowledge of placarding.
- Safe Driving Practices: Learn how to share the road with snowplows, livestock trucks, and wildlife at dawn and dusk.
- Road Signs & Signals: Wyoming uses special wind advisory and chain requirement signs – you’ll need to read them fast.
Study Tips
Start with the air brake section – it’s the most tested topic. Wyoming’s cold temperatures make brake maintenance critical. Practice until you can describe the slack adjuster adjustment without hesitation.
Use the official Wyoming CDL handbook alongside this test. We highlight the sections that matter most for Wyoming: mountain driving, winter weather, and cargo securement. Don’t skip the endorsements if you plan to haul fuel or livestock – those add extra questions.
Take the test multiple times. Each attempt shuffles the 50 questions. Focus on the ones you missed. Repeat until you hit 90% consistently. That’s your pass guarantee.
Wyoming DMV Information
You’ll take your General Knowledge test at a WYDOT Driver Services office. Find locations in Cheyenne, Casper, Rock Springs, Gillette, and others. Appointments are required – walk-ins not accepted. Schedule online or by phone at least two weeks ahead.
The fee for the written test is $10. You’ll need your Wyoming learner’s permit, proof of identity, and medical examiner’s certificate. If you fail, you can retake it the next business day (up to 3 tries). Study with our test to pass the first time.
After passing the written test, you’ll get a Commercial Learner’s Permit. It’s valid for 180 days. Use that time to practice driving with a qualified supervisor and prepare for the skills test. Don’t let the permit expire – you’ll have to pay and test again.
