About the New York Air Brakes Test
New York's commercial drivers face unique challenges. You've got the steep grades of the Catskills, the tight streets of Manhattan, and the unpredictable winter weather on the Thruway. Air brakes aren't optional here — they're required for any combination vehicle or bus with air brakes. The NY DMV tests your knowledge of brake systems, air loss rates, and emergency procedures.
Our practice test covers everything from slack adjusters to spring brakes. You'll learn to identify brake lag, check air pressure gauges, and perform a proper pre-trip inspection. Each question comes from the official New York CDL manual. We use the same language and concepts you'll see on test day.

New York DMV Information
Take the air brake knowledge test at any NY DMV office that offers CDL exams. Popular locations include the Albany DMV on South Pearl Street, the NYC DMV on West 30th Street, and the Buffalo DMV on Dingens Street. You don't need an appointment at most offices, but walk-ins wait longer. Check the DMV website for current hours — many offices close early on Wednesdays.
The air brake test fee is included in the CDL permit application fee ($12.50). If you fail, you pay the retest fee ($10) and wait until the next day to try again. You can retake the test as many times as needed within the permit's one-year validity period.
After passing the knowledge test, you'll get an air brake endorsement on your permit. This lets you practice driving vehicles with air brakes. The road test requires a vehicle with air brakes — make sure it's roadworthy or the examiner will refuse to test you.
