About the Iowa General Knowledge Test

Iowa's your home? Then you know our roads aren't simple. You'll haul grain down narrow farm lanes. You'll navigate the I-35/I-80 interchange during harvest season. Our General Knowledge test covers what you need.

Weather's a big deal here. Iowa winters bring snow and ice. Spring means mud and gravel road washouts. You can't avoid them - you need to know how to handle your rig safely.

This test mirrors Iowa's CDL exam. You'll face questions on air brakes, combination vehicles, and cargo securement. Each question's designed for Iowa's agricultural and industrial traffic.

Don't waste time studying generic stuff. Our questions focus on what Iowa's DMV actually asks. Pass your first time.

What This Test Covers

  • Air brakes - Iowa's hilly terrain and long descents on I-80 demand air brake mastery.
  • Combination vehicles - you'll pull trailers full of soybeans through Des Moines traffic.
  • Cargo securement - keep your load safe on Iowa's bumpy county roads.
  • Transporting hazardous materials - many Iowa farms handle anhydrous ammonia.
  • Road signs - Iowa's construction zones on I-35 need quick recognition.
  • Vehicle inspections - pre-trip checks save you from breakdowns in rural areas.

Study Tips

Study the Iowa CDL Handbook - it's your best resource. Focus on the sections about weight limits and agricultural exemptions. Many questions come straight from there.

Use our practice test to find weak spots. Don't just guess - read the explanations. Iowa's DMV often asks about specific distances like 100 feet for hazard lights.

Take the test when you're ready. No rush. Iowa gives you three attempts per year, but why waste them?
