About the California School Bus Test

California’s school bus drivers face unique challenges. You’ll navigate foggy Central Valley mornings, snowy Sierra Nevada passes, and congested LA freeways. The DMV’s School Bus test checks your knowledge of these conditions. We built this practice test around California’s specific laws and road situations.

School bus routes often serve rural communities like those in the Inland Empire or the coastal towns of Highway 101. You must know how to load and unload children safely while watching for farm equipment or sudden wildfires. This test covers those scenarios. Each question comes from the latest California CDL handbook.

You only have 25 minutes for 20 questions. That’s tight. We designed our questions to match the real test’s difficulty. You’ll see questions about railroad crossings, emergency exits, and pre-trip inspections. Practice until you score 80% or higher. Then you’ll walk into your DMV appointment with confidence.

What This Test Covers

  • Loading and unloading students: California’s school zones often have narrow streets and heavy pedestrian traffic.
  • Railroad crossing procedures: You’ll encounter many at-grade crossings in the Central Valley and along the coast.
  • Emergency evacuation drills: Required by California law for all school bus drivers annually.
  • Pre-trip vehicle inspection: California DMV examiners check your knowledge of brake systems, lights, and mirrors.
  • Student behavior management: Handling disruptions while driving California’s crowded highways demands focus.
  • Vehicle securement and wheelchair access: California requires specific securement for students with disabilities.

Study Tips

Study the California CDL Handbook chapter on School Buses. Read it twice. Then take this practice test. Note every question you miss. Review those sections again. California’s DMV may ask about their state-specific rules like the 10-foot clearance zone around the bus. Know it cold.

Schedule your appointment early. California DMV offices book up fast. Bring your medical certificate (form DL 546) and proof of residency. We recommend practicing until you score 100% three times in a row. That guarantees you’ll pass the written test on your first attempt.
